History of The Grounds

Historical view of the site

This cemetery marks the graves of several members of the DeLancey family, prominent enslavers in Mamaroneck in the late 1700s-early 1800s. The DeLancey family chose this site in 1806 for the burial of Maria Frances, John P. and Elizabeth DeLancey’s thirteen-year-old daughter who died accidentally. The names of those interred here, as well as which stone belongs to them, can be viewed on the sign by the cemetery entrance.

During the ongoing restoration of the burial ground by the Mamaroneck Historical Society, conservations discovered an unmarked grave believed to belong to an enslaved person. While this information has not been confirmed, conservations are working to identify the history behind the stone.
